Introduction:
Pharmacist prescribing is expanding across health systems, but countries vary widely in scope, level of autonomy and how competencies are defined and assessed. To support safe, patient-centred prescribing and promote global consistency, FIP is currently developing the Global Prescribing Competency Framework (GPCF).
The framework is being co-created by FIP Development Goal hub leads, drawing on a scoping review and global consultation with practitioners, educators, regulators and researchers from diverse regions and income settings. The GPCF will offer a common language for prescribing competencies that can be adapted to local legislation, service models and workforce needs.
This session will introduce the draft Global Prescribing Competency Framework and share emerging insights from its development. Speakers with expertise in pharmacist prescribing will outline how prescribing roles have evolved in their settings, how prescribing competencies are currently defined, taught and assessed, and how a global framework could in future support consistent approaches to credentialling, quality assurance and professional development pathways. These perspectives will illustrate the kinds of contexts in which the GPCF is intended to be applied once finalised.
Programme:
Learning objectives:
1. Discuss various levels of pharmacists’ prescribing globally.
2. Describe support mechanisms for pharmacists' prescribing practices in low, middle and high-income countries.
3. Examine barriers and challenges to expanding the role of pharmacists in prescribing.
Take home messages:
Participants will gain a shared language and draft framework for pharmacist prescribing competencies, hear how it can fit diverse health systems, and leave with concrete ideas to refine, adapt and advocate for pharmacist prescribing in their own context while contributing feedback to the ongoing development of the GPCF.
