Pharmacy in Canada is a vital part of the healthcare system, offering accessible and trusted
care to people across the country. Canada has approximately 42,500 licensed pharmacists
working in more than 10,000 pharmacies. Of those, about 70% work in community
pharmacies, 15% work in hospitals, and 15% work in other settings such as the
pharmaceutical industry, governments, associations, colleges and universities.
In recent years, the role of pharmacists in Canada has expanded significantly. Beyond
dispensing prescriptions, many now have the authority to renew and adapt prescriptions,
prescribe for minor ailments, administer vaccines, and provide medication reviews. This
broader scope of practice helps improve access to care, reduces strain on other parts of the
healthcare system, and enhances health outcomes for patients.
