Introduction:
Pharmacists represent one of the most accessible points of contact in healthcare, yet their role in dermatological care remains largely unstructured and underrecognized. A landmark global needs assessment conducted by the International Federation of Pharmacy (FIP), in partnership with La Roche-Posay, reveals that 86% of community pharmacists receive dermatological queries on a daily or near-daily basis β across 51 countries and all major world regions. Despite this reality, fewer than 23% have access to dermatology-specific guidelines, specific education hours are dropping, and confidence levels are often overestimated in areas such as differential diagnosis, triage, and referral decision-making.
Skin diseases are increasing every year and have been recognized as a global public health priority since May 2025 by the WHO. As access to dermatology care becomes increasingly difficult, pharmacists are uniquely positioned to improve early identification, appropriate management, and timely referral. This symposium addresses a critical and evidence-based question: how do we translate pharmacists' existing proximity to patients into structured, competent, and confident dermatological care?
Programme:
Learning objectives:
1. Understand the global evidence documenting the current role, opportunities and barriers pharmacists face in managing dermatological conditions in community pharmacy practice.
2. Apply a structured clinical decision framework to assess, manage, refer, and follow up on the most frequently encountered dermatological presentations in community pharmacy.
3. Recognize the role of dermocosmetics as evidence-based adjunctive therapy across key dermatological conditions and communicate their value confidently to patients.
Take home messages:
Dermatology is already part of every pharmacist's daily practice. With the right framework, education, and tools, pharmacists are uniquely positioned to close the gap between patient need and quality skin care β becoming true frontline actors in global dermatological health
