Details
Organised by the FIP Community Pharmacy Section, the FIP AMR Commission and the FIP Pharmacy Practice Research Special Interest Group
Chair(s)
Dr Yazid Al Hamarneh, University of Alberta, Canada & Mr Daragh Connolly, Vice President, International Pharmaceutical Federation, Ireland
Introduction:
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health threat that requires coordinated, evidence-informed action across all sectors of health care. As pharmacists increasingly take on prescribing roles, it is essential to ensure that antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) principles are embedded into prescribing practices to safeguard the effectiveness of antimicrobials and promote responsible use.
This session will explore how AMS and AMR considerations are being integrated into pharmacist prescribing models, with a focus on evidence, policy, and implementation. It will highlight findings from population-level studies, including the PATH-UTI trial, and showcase international perspectives on how pharmacists are supported to prescribe responsibly within evolving healthcare systems. To strengthen global framing, the session will additionally compare how AMS principles are embedded within pharmacist prescribing across diverse regulatory and practice environments, including countries with independent prescribing, pharmacist-initiated therapy, supplementary prescribing, and settings without dispensing separation
Attendees will gain insights into how pharmacists can be supported to prescribe responsibly, with a clear understanding of AMR risks and stewardship strategies. The session will provide a platform for dialogue among pharmacists, policymakers, and researchers to identify future directions for education, regulation and practice.
Programme:
Learning objectives:
1. Present evidence on the impact of pharmacist prescribing on AMR trends.
2. Explore how AMS principles are incorporated into prescribing protocols and clinical decision-making.
3. Discuss challenges and opportunities in aligning prescribing with AMS goals in real-world settings.
4. Present international and LMIC perspectives on AMS‑aligned pharmacist prescribing.
Take home messages:
Pharmacist prescribing must be guided by antimicrobial stewardship principles to ensure safe, effective, and sustainable use of antimicrobials.
Evidence from real-world trials demonstrates the potential impact of pharmacist prescribing on AMR trends, highlighting the importance of monitoring and evaluation.
Embedding AMS into prescribing protocols and decision-making tools supports pharmacists in balancing access with stewardship, particularly in primary care settings.
Ongoing education, research, and international dialogue are needed to refine and expand pharmacist prescribing models that contribute meaningfully to AMR containment.
AMS integration in pharmacist prescribing varies globally; understanding contextual enablers and regulatory pathways is essential for scaling models responsibly.
Strengthening education, workforce training, and capacity building supports safe and stewardship aligned prescribing across all income settings.
