Overview
MOMO-0201 - Introducing a headache service in Norwegian pharmacies
The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023 estimates health loss from migraine, tension-type headache, and medication-overuse headache. The burden is comprehensive:
• Almost three billion people in the world suffer from one or more headache disorders
• Headache disorders are the sixth leading cause of health loss globally (the health loss is high in all regions)
• The health loss is over twice as high among females compared to males
• Over one fifth of the global headache burden is attributed to medication overuse, meaning that a substantial portion of the burden can be easily treated/prevented
Pharmacies around the world have different possibilities and tools to help patients with headache disorders. Some countries have a pharmacy headache service where pharmacists can dispense triptans in accordance with defined protocols. In most countries triptans are Rx only medication, and pharmacists can only offer NSAIDS and paracetamol as self care to patients if they don’t have a prescription.
The plan for introducing a standardised headache service in all Norwegian pharmacies will be presented. We will explain how we have collaborated and worked to establish support among decision makers, patient organisations and the manufacturers.
Preliminary agenda:
- The burden of headache and migraines globally
- How could pharmacy be part of the solution in reducing the burden
- Collaboration to introduce a national headache service in Norwegian pharmacies.
MOMO-0202 – Pioneering sustainable pharmacy practice in Taiwan
The Taiwan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (TSHP) is proud to showcase our strategic shift towards sustainable pharmacy practice. By integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into our core operations, we are addressing the pharmacy workforce challenge while pioneering a "Net Zero" future for health care. Our newly established Sustainable Development Committee serves as the architect for this transformation, focusing on three critical areas: workforce reform, AI-driven efficiency, and environmental stewardship.
Key Initiatives:
• Workforce and governance reform: TSHP is actively redefining hospital accreditation standards and formalising a pharmacy technician system. By delegating technical tasks, we empower hospital pharmacists to transition from dispensing to cognitive services, directly mitigating structural shortages.
• Operational sustainability via AI: Automation is our primary tool for labor recovery. Cheng Kung University Hospital implemented AI-driven "box-drug delivery" and CDSS systems, reducing total daily labor by 66 hours and decreasing dispensing errors by 59%. Similarly, Chang-Gung Memorial Hospital has digitised clinical trial drug management, using barcode-driven logic to ensure 100% precision in complex blinded trials.
• Environmental stewardship: Aligning with Taiwan's 2050 Net Zero goals, Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital launched the transition to FHIR-standard electronic prescriptions. This paperless revolution reduces carbon footprints by 1.35 tons of CO2 annually and slashes community pharmacy processing times from 2 minutes to under 30 seconds.
• Social Impact through Precision Care: Our specialised clinics at Taipei Veterans General Hospitals utilise Large Language Models and patented algorithms to provide "warm" yet precise care. These initiatives have successfully boosted medication adherence from 74.3% to 86.7% in Pre-ESRD (End-stage renal disease) patients.
TSHP is leading Taiwan’s pharmacy to prove that sustainability is not just about "going green"—it is about building a resilient professional ecosystem. By balancing human-centric policy with technological innovation, TSHP is ensuring that the pharmacy profession remains globally competitive, environmentally responsible, and fundamentally professional.
