Organised by the FIP Antimicrobial Resistance Commission Chair(s) Dr Catia Caneiras, Executive Committee Member, the FIP AMR Commission, Portugal & Mrs. Raquel Martínez García, Vice President, International Pharmaceutical Federation, Spain Introduction: According to the WHO, in recent years, invasive fungal diseases have emerged as a rising public health concern, with common infections growing increasingly resistant to treatment. Vulnerable populations—such as the immunocompromised, critically ill, and elderly—remain the most affected. Addressing this global threat requires an integrated approach that connects global scientific guidance with effective action at the clinical and public health levels. An essential step is the establishment of Antifungal Stewardship Programmes (AFSPs), which promote the appropriate use of antifungals and optimise patient outcomes. These programmes depend on the availability of reliable diagnostics, evidence-based guidelines, and strong educational foundations that empower healthcare professionals to act confidently and collaboratively. Pharmacists play a central role in ensuring appropriate antifungal use, guiding therapeutic decisions, facilitating timely diagnosis, and promoting education among healthcare teams. Strengthening their capacity in antifungal stewardship is key to improving patient outcomes and combating resistance sustainably. When they are well equipped, pharmacists, through science, education, and collaborative practice, can contribute to building resilient systems against the growing fungal threat and drive the “One Health” agenda forward. Programme:
11:00 – 11:10 Introduction by the chairs
11:10 – 11:30 The global context and implications of the WHO Fungal Priority Pathogens List
Ms Valerie Gigante, World Health Organization, Switzerland
11:30 – 12:00 The role of pharmacists in advancing diagnostic capacity and implementing antifungal stewardship programmes
Speaker to be confirmed
12:00 – 12:25 Panel discussion with chairs, speakers and additional panellists
12:25 – 12:30 Closing remarks by the chairs
Learning objectives: 1. Describe the WHO Fungal Priority Pathogens List, including the critical, high, and medium priority classifications and their global significance. 2. Explain the 2025 WHO updates on fungal diagnostics and treatments and their implications for healthcare practice and stewardship. 3. Identify pharmacists’ roles in optimising antifungal therapy, implementing stewardship programmes, and translating global priorities into effective local interventions. 4. Address key challenges in antifungal therapy, including the limited antifungal drug pipeline and the declining efficacy of existing treatments. Take home messages: Implementing the WHO Fungal Priority Pathogens List can guide pharmacists in selecting appropriate antifungal therapy and prioritising interventions for high-risk infections. Antifungal stewardship programmes are essential to curb the growing threat of antifungal resistance and ensure optimal patient outcomes. Interprofessional collaboration and effective communication among healthcare stakeholders strengthen policy implementation, enhance stewardship efforts, and improve patient care across health systems.
