Introduction:
This session explores motivational interviewing as a tool to start deeper conversation with patients with stigma in any practice pharmacy setting: community pharmacy, hospital, nursing home. Motivational interviewing is not necessary part of pharmacy curricula in many countries, so there is always a demand to practice and learn more. Patients with stigma to be "difficult patients" often experience shallow conversation in the healthcare system, but they need to be equally treated, if not with extra care, as any other patients. Speakers and chairs are experienced practitioners and educators with international experience and motivational abilities. Also, they are experienced researchers in domain of pharmaceutical care, communisation and care for patients with intellectual disabilities.
Programme:
Learning objectives:
1. Understand the importance of involving patients with stigma in motivational interviewing process.
2. Explore practical examples of patients with stigma that need motivation.
3. Identify educational strategies and competencies that prepare practitioners to engage effectively in motivating patients with stigma.
Take home messages:
Pharmacists play a vital role in motivation of the patients with stigma. It is needed to understand motivational interview and to principles and to be able to start conversations with patients with difficult conditions. Inclusivity and equity are needed every time, every place, every case — far from the shallow.
